Ecosystem services of urban rivers: a systematic review
Urban freshwater ecosystems face numerous threats due to urbanization, impacting hydrological cycles, biodiversity, and ecosystem processes. These ecosystems can provide valuable services to urban populations, but high population density and urban development often diminish these benefits. A systematic review of publications from 2006 to 2022 identified 118 papers on urban river ecosystems, focusing on provisioning (water and food supply), regulating (water quality and flood mitigation), and cultural services (recreation, education, aesthetics). Economic valuation of these services was discussed in 19% of the articles, and 18% included public opinions. The study highlights the need for more research on urban streams, standardizing indicators, and increasing citizen involvement in ecosystem service evaluation.
