Harnessing AI for Environmental Progress: Insights from the OneAquaHealth Project and Beyond

Over the past decade, AI has revolutionized various domains due to modern computational capabilities and new algorithms. The EU has created an AI policy framework to ensure responsible and ethical AI development. AI’s significant impact is seen in scientific discovery, accelerating research and addressing challenges like climate change and healthcare. The EU is exploring policies to boost AI adoption in science, with reports suggesting a European institute for AI in science. In this context a survey of Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe projects was conducted to highlight AI’s benefits in climate and environmental research, driving scientific progress and aiding decision-making. The survey covers 19 projects funded by Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe, including OneAquaHealth project. Based on the collected insights, it was established that AI methodologies like ML, DL, and NLP are used to analyze EO data, improve models, and support decision-making. However, challenges include tool complexity, data privacy, and the need for interdisciplinary training. The resulted publication outlines among others, research needs and suggests future strategies, aiming to inspire researchers and inform them about the state-of-the-art in AI. It also provides contacts for experts and groups using AI.
